Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and non-binary people (LGBT+) all face a very real and very prevalent social stigma. This population is frequently harassed in public spaces which can cause a number of social disorders, feelings of disenfranchisement, and general unhappiness. Because of these unique dangers to the mental health of teens in the LGBTQ+ community, Ascend Healthcare wants to assure you that we accept and include your teen in our LGBT residential treatment regardless of their personal identity.
LGBTQ+ Mental Health Support at Ascend
We want all the clients in our teen treatment center to thrive, so we nurture an environment of trust and safety for everyone. While we strive to break down the walls of every teen that participates in our LGBT-friendly residential treatment center in California, Ascend is aware that this can be much harder for those that are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Our awareness of the added stress most LGBTQ+ teens experience means our LGBT+ mental health counselor takes extra care when interacting with these clients.
Many LGBTQ+ teens are struggling with more than one mental disorder due to underlying causes that generally relate back to society’s perception and reaction to their gender identity or sexual orientation. Our focus is to help them better understand themselves, find support among like minded individuals, and teach them how to navigate the stressors they may encounter in the real world.
Benefits of Treatment with LGBTQ+ Inclusivity
Some of the steps Ascend takes to ensure the inclusivity and comfort at our LGBTQ+ friendly residential treatment center include:
- Recognition of their personal needs and the implementation of policies that ensure that those needs are met.
- Professional inclusivity training for our staff and sensitivity discussions with all those in treatment with your teen.
- Setting inclusive policies and procedures for the facility as a whole.
- Identification, acknowledgment, and remediation of any bullying or intolerance from anyone undergoing LGBTQ+ or trans residential treatment.
- Acknowledgment and normalization of the emotional lives of LGBTQ+ clients.
Our moral compass and best practices require the preservation of the safety, dignity, and humanity of LGBT+ residential treatment clients at Ascend. We offer them onsite support and additional resources from many professional, academic, and governmental sources, including the American Psychological Association, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and various Gay & Lesbian Centers.
